Welcome to the DIYC Race Blog
Here, by popular request (Tiffany, Brian and Kevin), is the place you can read and post comments, exchange ideas, and even post photos related to racing at Duck Island Yacht Club. There will be link to it on the club's website homepage, www.diyc.com, or you can bookmark it yourself. This is open to members and non-members of the club.

Is this blog actually going to be read and recognized by club members? or is it going to be a spewing point for whiners? LOL! Whiners need not apply! anywho...I was wondering how feasable it is and what people would think about moving the laser series to tueday nights? There is already an RC boat out every other tuesday, so why not make tuesdays L night? Ladies and Lasers? Unless there are any women skippers who currently race lasers at the club, I see no harm in spreading the fleets across two different nights...this would also facilitate growth in the laser class at DIYC (which is already impressive) hopefully this blog is productive....something down here needs to be! -Tim (not anonymous)
ReplyDeletethe spreading of the fleets would work because there are currently 4 to 5 sailors between etchells and JY's who would most likely be in a laser if a laser series did not conflict with current (etchells/JY) series'. how do attache a name to posts??? as to eliminate the "anonymous"
ReplyDeleteWe need to be clear about who can read this stuff. We may also want to not allow anonymous entries... (;-}

Please add the Year to dates in event calendars... It is easy to get them mixed up this time of year.
ReplyDeletespewing? whining? sounds like it's already started.
ReplyDeleteOh, well - Great idea, Dick, and thanks for all the continuing work for us.
A couple of good ideas posted already.
We've got the RC boats - hope we can get the personnel for the expansion on Tuesday.

ReplyDeleteLaser class on Tuesdays might be fun - A radial class would be cool but I can try and sail with the big dogs with full rigs. A Sunfish class might even bring some people to the water. Thanks :-) Paula Riebold
ReplyDeleteHere is a bottom line statement: More lasers = more fun, and tuesday nights would = more lasers! If anyone has or knows of any issues that would prevent that starting of a tuesday night laser series, please let me know, as I would like to help work around them, or help with whatever needed. I dont see any reason to prohibit the growth of THE BEST single handed one design fleet at our own club! (again, there are probably a few that I am unaware of)
ReplyDelete-Tim (Im going to post as anonymous untill someone holds my hand and walks me thru getting a blog screen name...im not very tech savy, at ALL!)
It is my understanding that the Etchells will not be sailing Thursdays. It would seem a more natural fit to sail with the JYs and other small 1 designs instead of mixing with the big fleet.
ReplyDeleteGood luck though.
I think it would be nice if at least the one design and other race schedules and dates were posted ASAP! as it is difficult to commit to what boats to race and plan for such series' when the dates and plans arent even posted on the club site. how about a OD Blog, for the lasers, JY's and Etchells classes? This may be my problem only, but personally I need to plan my sailing now, so I can do and commit to as much as possible. Im in my final semester(s) at school and I do not have the time, or the money to produce a Laser, or any boat on short notice... lets get some of the OD info up and readable!

ReplyDeleteI def agree with the asap "public notice" of what is happening with the OD fleets this summer! early information breeds early commitments, which breeds more involvement!
ReplyDeleteTo Tim, or anyone else that would like to comment without being anonymous. Some choices:
ReplyDelete1. Just put your name (full is better) and the end of your comment as a few have done.
or
2. In the "Comment as:" box (underneath the comment window) pick one of the options if have an id from one of those application, or else select Google Account. I suspect you'll be prompted to enter your Google id or create one. To create one is painless and free.
or
3. Select Name/URL and give your name and email address.
Will the lasers and etchells et al be invited to the Leukemia race? When is it???
ReplyDeleteWe need RC volunteers, especially if you want to expand the days of racing. Additional days without additional RC members will dilute the efforts of RC on all days. It would be nice to see more people "step up to the plate" and join RC on days that they aren't racing so we can give them the additional days that they want to race on. Mat
ReplyDeletemore people may step up to the plate if the plate(RC job) was less monitored! Although a club RC representitive is crucial, it is not crucial that the (Club) RC calls (ALL) the shots on the water.....some potential volunteers may do a tremendous job in this respect. and if your wondering I am not a supporter of the past rabble rousing we had go on on the RC boat....I just want to see quality racing being run all the time, sans the trivial B.S.
ReplyDeleteI want thank the many people who have emailed me in response to my posting in this blog in mid-January. We now have 4 members who will be taking the PRO course this upcoming spring. This last fall three members took the course (and passed!!) so that we will now have 7 member PRO's which was a far cry from zero PRO's at the start of 2008 season! DIYC thanks you very much for your support and it will enable us to better serve our expanded racing schedule for 2009. The duties will include the operation of our fleet boats, running races and assisting other PROs. Hopefully, this will also give us renewable resource for Race Committee Chairpersons in the future. There still is plenty of room for more who want to join RC and even to become PRO's. We welcome you. Mat
ReplyDeleteHey I can volunteer my time on tuesday nights and occasional weekends (maybe), other than that Im busy. Who do I get in contact with at the club to get on this "list" of potential rc crew? (for tuesdays!)

P.S. this thing requires me to have another password (gmail etc. and my school email cant be used) and I have enough passwords with school...so anon it will be! contacts???
Tim, Tuesdays would be great. You can get involved as little or as much as would like -- whatever suits your schedule. Come May we'll talk more about it. Until then, stay warm! Mat
ReplyDeleteSometimes when I "should" be paying attention in class I get bored and watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN7qNMWywSE
ReplyDeleteso if anyone happens to see this blog while under the shroud (get it!) of boredom, check out that link....MAN sailing!!! lol
Its the 2006 Rhoute du Rhum start, or a compilation of many shots of it.

Did anyone go to the North Sail expo in Milford?
ReplyDeleteIf so, was it worth the trip?
